The New Community Project is a joint effort of the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service and South Dakota State University.  This project is sponsored and funded by the South Dakota State Legislature in an effort to share the results of the most recent 2000 Census of Population with the residents of South Dakota.  Dr. Jim Satterlee, director of the project, is traveling throughout the state disseminating data for the state, counties, and communities using the Cooperative Extension Service’s Field Education Units as an outline.  These presentations look at the implication of changes in population, migration, age structure, and changes in number of farms on local communities.  Dr. Satterlee’s concept of a New Community attempts to bring together community leaders in an attempt to revitalize efforts to rebuild rural South Dakota.
